Using a dial-up modem on Windows 98
Introduction
This is a follow-up article to installing a US Robotics 56K Faxmodem on Windows 98. We are now ready to test the modem connection to Internet and see if it still works in 2024.
Connection nodes still available in Spain
At the end of the 90's, Telefonica launched a service called InfoVía Plus which was used to access the Internet via dial-up in Spain.
The service was made up of 140 nodes distributed along the Spanish territory, with a phone number assigned to each one. The service was decommissioned, although some remote nodes are still operative today.
In this page we will see what nodes are still active and responding as of Jan 13th 2024.

How to establish a dial-up connection using Windows 98
Once the modem is set-up in Windows 98 (see this page on how to install it), we are now able to establish a dial-up connection.
The topology is somewhat similar to the image above, although nowadays the dial-up connection could run over VoIP as is doing in this case but for the sake of simplicity we will pretend the modem is directly connected to a wall jack and just ignore further details.
To create a new dial-up connection in Windows 98 make sure the modem is correctly cabled and on:
Modem physical connections
- Double-click the My Computer icon.
- Double-click the Dial-Up Networking folder.
- Double-click the Make New Connection icon.
- Under Type a name for the computer you are dialing, type "Test" or anything you want..
- Click the Next button.
- In the Telephone number box, type the dial-up number you will connect to.
- Click Next and Finish.
Once the connection is established you will see this confirmation message:

These nodes are toll-free. However I have yet to investigate why on Windows 98 the don't receive any data so there's not much to do after establishing the connection. You can see it on the connection statistics window. There are bytes sent out from the computer, but not a single one received after the connection is established.
On Windows 10, web browsing and telnetting to a BBS does work after connection establishment.
